Study of the design and manufacture of a heat exchanger with ceramic components for use at high temperature and in a corrosive environment
This project aimed to construct a heat exchanger for an autorecuperative burner, working efficiently in the corrosive environment of high temperature furnaces. This involved developing an annular SiC recuperator with inner and outer fins. Corrosion tests were performed on the material; the design and manufacture of the heat exchanger were carried out. A prototype of a 100 kW autorecuperative burner was built and thermohydraulic performance tests were performed. The performance was very good, but the manufacture was too difficult (and expensive) and cracks appeared in the heat exchanger tube during the tests.
