Flow surges have been observed in the instrumented U-tube of the broken loop steam generator during a single phase natural circulation period of a Loss of Feed Water (LOFW) transient conducted in the LOBI-MOD2 test facility. The paper presents a physical and analytical interpretation of the mechanism governing the onset and eventual divergence of flow surges observed in the LOBI-MOD2 steam generators during the evolution of thermal hydraulic transients relevant to decay heat removal in PWRs. A generalised analytical steady-state model is used to characterise the transient from the potential operating conditions of steam generators. A numerical method is then described, applicable to unstable conditions.
