Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

This report evaluates the opportunities for deriving useful liquid products from biomass pyrolysis and the status of current research in this area under the EC Energy from Biomass programme. It considers the various technologies for pyrolysis, catalytic liquefaction and upgrading of oils by hydrotreatment, reviewing work in Brazil, Canada, the USA and Finland. It discusses pilot plant requirements and environmental aspects of emissions from pyrolysis processes. Possible applications include charcoal-water slurries, pyrolysis oils, chemicals and fuel additives, and utilisation in industrial firing plants and in refineries. The final chapter summarises the main problem areas remaining and identifies R&D needs for the short, medium and long term.
