Wind tunnel tests of a deep seabed penetrator model
The results of wind tunnel tests performed in 1985 on a 1:2.5 scale model of a European Standard Penetrator in the Aermacchi low speed wind tunnel are summarised. Tests covered the measurement of overall fluid dynamic forces at varying angle of attack and measurement of unsteady pressures acting on the instrumentation head protruding in the penetrator's wake. Overall force coefficients were found to be in good agreement with predictions and unsteady pressures were much smaller than expected. No mechanical damage to instrumentation is foreseen, even at the high dynamic pressures typical of the penetrator moving into water.
