New electric power producing technologies are being developed, based on coal fired combined cycle, gas and steam turbine plants. These new technologies are characterised by their high fuel utilisation and low environmental impact. This report is the result of a development project based on a pressurised circulating fluidised bed, one of the most promising new coal technologies. The aim of the project was to establish the basic design of an advanced fluidised bed, based on the patented multi-circulating boiler design of Aalborg Boilers. It also concentrated on acquiring the knowledge necessary to build a plant with a low environmental impact. Based on tests on a 2 MWt circulating fluidised bed test plant, an empirically based model was developed for the calculation of SO(x) and NO(x) emissions. A theoretical study of a number of plant configurations based on different turbomachinery was carried out, and software for the analysis of a plant under both stationary and dynamic conditions (such as start-up, control and shut down) was developed.
