Workshop on indicators and indices for environmental impact assessment and risk analysisFunded under: JRC-INDHAZ 2C
This report contains the papers presented at the Workshop on Indicators and Indices for Environmental Impact Assessment and Risk Analysis held at Ispra in May 1990. The papers are grouped into four sections. Section 1 is devoted to approaches and case studies. The first paper discusses a computer-based approach to EIA and the second describes past experience and target policy for the protection of the river Rhine against pollution. The last two papers illustrate EIA and RA in Denmark, and EIA in Italy. Section 2 concerns air, water and soil indicators and indices. The use of plants as bioindicators for monitoring air pollution, water policy in Belgium and soil quality indicators in the Netherlands are discussed. The relationship between physico-chemical and biotic indices of air and water quality is also investigated. Section 3 deals with the use of environmental data. The main topics considered are the quality of environmental data and the treatment of uncertainty in environmental management methods. Section 4 includes papers on normal operation and accident risks in industry, and on risk management in biotechnology.
