Investigation on field removed pipe sections in the PISC Hot LaboratoriesFunded under: JRC-REACTSAFE 5C
Action No. 1 of PISC III (Programme for the Inspection of Steel Components): Real Contaminated Structures (RCS), seeks to collect results from specific investigations and limited round robin tests on real service-induced defects in materials and structures of the primary circuit of light water reactors. The hot cell facilities at JRC-Ispra were used for non-destructive and destructive testing. Cracked austenitic steel pipes from the primary circuit of the Muehleberg reactor in Switzerland were inspected in order to demonstrate the validity of the facilities for the examination of these contaminated pieces. The examined samples demonstrate that detection and sizing of defects by ultrasonic testing techniques is possible.
