Agrometeorology and physiology of grain maize in the European CommunityFunded under: JRC-REMSENS 4C
The aim of this pilot project was to introduce remote sensing into the agricultural statistics system of the EC. The emphasis was on developing agrometeorological models for regional observation of the state of cultures and for quantitative forecasting of national yields. The data necessary for the development of these models comprise statistics on acreages cultivated, yields and varietal distribution, regionalised culture calendars, growth conditions of cultures and tillage methods, as well as administrative boundaries or homogeneous geographical units of this culture. An inventory of available information on grain maize cultivation in the EC is provided, based on the literature and on expert opinion. This presents general information on the agronomy and production of maize, physical and environmental conditions for growth, as well as a summary of published models of the relationships between maize growth, yield and meteorological conditions.
