Abstract

Details are given of a snapshot survey of the water quality of the Po river. The results indicate that water pollution by chemicals is minimal, whereas microbiological pollution is considerable. A possible explanation for the low level of chemical pollution could be that chemicals are rapidly buried in sediments. The environmental problems in the Po valley are described and the main objectives of the Po river basin "Master Plan" are presented. The "Master Plan" is a planning and programming tool to recover the basin's environmental quality and satisfy the demands for water resources.
