Abstract

Dismantling techniques and, particularly, thermal cutting tools can create large amounts of airborne dust, which may become contaminated when cutting radioactive materials. Among secondary solid emissions, aerosols are the most mobile part which can disseminate in the cell where the cutting operation takes place and in the ventilation ducts up to the HEPA filters. An optimised prefiltration coupled with a collecting device at the aerosol generating source makes it possible to prevent the contamination from spreading, increase the life of the HEPA filters and thus reduce the amount of solid wastes. The aim of this study was to select one or more appropriate cleaning devices, based on the physico-chemical characteristics of the gas and aerosols to be dealt with, the available cleaning devices and the facility concerned.
