  • Pollution at coke works : Joint report of investigations into the measurement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Project 7257-13) and benzene, toluene and xylene (Project 7257-14) in and around coke works

Two projects are described which aimed at determining the role played by coke works in pollution by benzene, toluene, xylene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The investigations focussed on the development or authentication of methodologies for the sampling and analysis of the various compounds in emissions, at workplaces and in the environment of coke works. Using the methodologies established, samples of emissions, of the air in workplaces and of air at various locations within and outside the works' perimeters, were collected and analysed to provide details of the distribution profiles. Records of meteorological conditions and of works design and operating parameters were obtained for subsequent correlation analysis.
