Abstract

Dismantling is necessary in the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. Due to high levels of radioactivity, the structures of the primary circuit of boiling water and pressurised water reactors have to be dismantled under water. Various mechanical and thermal tools are available for this task. Selection of a tool for a given task has to consider not only the design and technical equipment of the tool, but also the handling of the generated secondary waste. The aim of this research was to record all cutting by-products generated during underwater grinding and plasma arc cutting. The emissions produced were analysed and the suitability of air and water filter systems for the filtration of emissions produced by both thermal and mechanical cutting was determined.
