The 16th symposium on fusion technology (SOFT) discussed current fusion programmes in Europe, Japan and the USA. Many contributions referred to safety and environmental issues. Boundary layer physics and plasma heating were also important topics. Other papers considered fusion material research, superconductors, blanket technology and tritium handling. Three invited papers were also given on "Next Step" devices. The two reports included here contain a summary of the symposium (JET-P(90)61) and a preprint of papers presented by JET authors (JET-P(90)56).
