Abstract

Using normal steel-making procedures, it is not possible to obtain steel with total oxygen contents lower than 10 or 20 ppm. The aim of this research project was to develop methods to eliminate some of the steel inclusions in the tundish and limit the formation of reoxidation inclusions. The study was composed of three parts: - inclusion filtration by barriers pierced with large diameter holes (greater than 10 mm); - argon blowing in special permeable elements mounted in the tundish bottom in such a way that inclusion decantation is accelerated, and - protection of the metal in the tundish during filling by carbon dioxide snow.
