This paper discusses a resonant atomic process in dense plasmas which previously has not been studied carefully: a free electron is captured by an ion into an autoionising state whose stabilisation occurs via collisional processes. The rate for this mechanism is proportional to the square of the electronic density. It may appropriately be called "resonant three-body recombination". It is shown that, for many ions in a broad range of temperatures and densities, this mechanism is the dominant recombination process.
