This book is a comprehensive manual for thermal system design based on the use of the modular transient simulation program EMGP3 for thermal systems. This program package for personal computers has been developed as part of the R&D project OPSYS of the Commission of the European Communities. As a modular simulation program which contains many different elementary system components, EMGP3 is a powerful tool for thermal solar system development and, more generally, for any thermal system design calculation. It allows the user to simulate a large variety of thermal systems, to evaluate the energy balance of the simulated system to any desired degree of detail, to investigate different control strategies, or to perform parametric analysis. This manual summarises each of the physical models used to simulate the system components available, the processing of solar radiation data and the mathematical algorithms implemented. The book includes a selected series of examples of system simulations based on EMGP3, mainly in the field of thermal solar systems.
