European simplified methods for active solar system designFunded under: FP1-ENNONUC 3C
This handbook deals with the design of thermal active solar systems for space heating and hot water, with emphasis on the European Simplified Methods, ESM1 and ESM2, which are design tools developed within the framework of the European OPSYS Project. Computer programs are available for both these methods. ESM1 and ESM2 allow the estimation of the long term performance of a given system, as well as the comparison of a variety of alternatives, thus leading to an optimised system design. Active solar systems are described from several points of view: schematics, components, operation and control. The components of the solar loop and other basic items required for solar system design are analysed. ESM1 and ESM2 are presented in detail, with complete algorithms, input parameters, worked examples, and a software user's guide. The validation results of a comparison with the detailed simulation program EMGP2 are also given. A special chapter is devoted to economic comparison. Additional information is provided in seven appendices, covering meteorological data, properties of materials, aide-mémoire for computer programs, and a manual version of ESM1.
