Abstract

The influence of random phase plates on the homogeneity of long plasma columns has been studied by X-ray imaging methods. These plasma inhomogeneities can be correlated to gain measurements, to explain the gain reduction observed in long plasmas compared to short ones. A clear correspondence was observed experimentally between the calculated flux density modulations produced by RPP and the observed polychromatic X-UV plasma images. The consequece on laser gain at a wavelength of 105.7 Angstrom is discussed.
