The first wall of fusion reactors is subjected to harsh loading conditions, in terms of neutron irradiation, thermal and mechanical loads and surface erosion processes. Under such complex loading conditions, the evaluation of the operating limits of the materials can only be performed by reproducing as closely as possible the fusion reactor's operating conditions. Special devices have been developed at the High Flux Reactor (HFR) division to match the experimental requirements. The HFR-Petten, operated by the Joint Research Centre, is employed mostly as a material testing reactor. More than one quarter of the running experiments are devoted to the definition of design data for the NET and other future demonstration plants. On-going irradiation on first wall structural materials is illustrated.
