Diesel engine design and operation on variable quality fuels
The project objective is to develop a diesel simulation facility which can be used to predict the effects of variable fuel quality on engine performance. Some forty different fuels have been analysed chemically and then tested in five different engines, to investigate the interaction between engine design features and fuel characteristics. The prototype simulation facility consists of the following components: - databases for fuel, fuel treatment and engine; - simulation models for fuel treatment, heat release and cycle simulation, and - expert systems for fuel matching, engine matching, fuel classification for combustion, fuel classification for maintenance, and an optimiser.
