FORALAB, a probe for measuring the radioactive tracer retention properties of the geological environment in drill-holes
The aim of the study was to produce and test a new type of probe for working in a drill-hole which allows the measurement of the migration of radioactive pollutants under in situ conditions. After explaining the reasons for adopting this type of approach, the adjustment and operation of the probe are described. The tests were carried out at the granitic site of Auriat (France), using inactive ruthenium. The results showed that the tracer was retained by the unweathered granite and that the retardation factor was 7.3. The probe is now available for a complete experimental programme.
