Abstract

A European intercomparison of 1 mm hydrophone calibrations in the frequency range 0.5 to 15 MHz has been organised by the BCR. Five laboratories in Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK have calibrated three types of hydrophone using different methods (two-transducer reciprocity, an impulse technique and optical interferometry). The uncertainties quoted at the 95% confidence level ranged from 2.3% to 18%, depending on the frequency, method and laboratory. The results show that it is possible, with care, to obtain agreement between reciprocity and interferometry to within a few per cent in the range 0.5 to 5 MHz. At 10 and 15 MHz, however, individual results deviate by up to 15% from the grand mean of results. This report presents the results and discusses the conclusions that can be drawn from the intercomparison.
