Investigation of the controlled cooling of continuously cast slab ingots in the caster and during transport to the reheat furnace with the aim of conserving the enthalpy

The reason for transporting slabs that are still hot over comparatively large distances, from the continuous casting plant to the reheat furnaces in the wide strip rolling mill, is to ensure the highest possible input temperatures by using the remaining heat from the continuous casting procedure. In this context, methods of slab handling were investigated in order to identify weak points in the conservation of the enthalpy. Above all, the aim was to optimise the design of insulating hoods and floors used for transport of the slabs by rail.
