Abstract

Six orifice plates have been calibrated in the NEL cold-water test facilities; the discharge coefficients obtained using corner, flange and D and D/2 tappings were compared with the values predicted by ISO 5167. The effect of the D and D/2 tappings on the corner and flange tappings was measured, as were the effects of locating flow straighteners at different positions upstream of the various orifice plates. The pipe friction coefficient of the pipework supplied with the orifice plates was measured and traverses were carried out to determine the velocity distribution in the plane of the orifice plates both with and without the presence of a flow straightener a short distance upstream of that plane. Checks were made to demonstrate the repeatability of the test procedure.
