Amongst other current studies in the environmental area at the JRC Ispra, new analytical techniques and methodologies have been developed for the characterisation of physical and chemical processes which occur in the atmosphere. In this context, since September 1990 a DOAS-type optical device for the measurement of gaseous atmospheric pollution has been set up in the centre of Milan. The aim is to determine the concentration of every chemical species in an urban atmosphere, in an area characterised by strong emissions and, meteorologically, by frequent thermal inversion with little wind, which are the conditions most favourable to increased pollution levels. This report presents a brief description of the technique and various significant measurements taken in Milan during the recent episode of smog at the end of February 1991.
