Abstract

The Tore Supra refrigerator is the fifth machine in the world operating at approximately 1.8 K, but with a refrigeration power of 320 W at 1.75 K. Its principal characteristics are: - the compression of helium at low temperature; - a large number of operating modes, and - an entirely automatic control system. The first cooldown of the torus began in February 1988. With the exception of two weeks during the summer of 1988, the torus was maintained at temperatures below 4.5 K until the end of March 1989 i.e. during 13 months, which is the current record for a machine of such great size under such operating conditions.
