  • Development of a low-cost PC-based image-processing and mapping GIS within the frames of the EEC Joint Research Centre's Collaborative Programme


The Collaborative Programme on European Marginal Areas - remote sensing in land-use planning and environmental protection - is a network of European laboratories and institutes, led and managed by the Joint Research Centre. The general programme objectives are to develop and define remote sensing related tools and methods by means of which less favoured rural areas and marginal land can be identified, classified and mapped in a quantitative way, in order to protect the environment and stimulate development of such areas. At the same time the programme seeks to analyse and develop fields where remote sensing can supply new and constructive insight into environmental processes. The Department of Physics, University College Dublin, has developed software packages, PC-IMega and IM-X, which are specially geared towards applications where facilities are almost lacking or at a premium, and also for training. The software is currently being used and tested by a variety of participants in the programme, particularly in the fields of forestry, landscape planning and soil erosion vulnerability assessment. The software is modular, containing 12 units of program, display, filtering and GIS (geographic information system) software.
