Abstract

The ALTAIR diagnostic has been developed to analyse the density fluctuations with wavelength between 0.2 and 2 cm in the Tore Supra tokamak, using the coherent Thomson scattering of a CO(2) laser beam. For small scattering angles, the transverse resolution is excellent, but there is no resolution along the direction of observation because the length of the scattering volume is greater than the diameter of the plasma. Some resolution can be obtained, however, by taking into account the helicity of the magnetic field lines in the tokamak. This resolution is better for higher K and lower q(a). It also confirms the fact that the turbulence is locally perpendicular to the magnetic field lines and quite isotropic in K(theta) and K(r).
