A 3-D mathematical model for circulation in coastal areas was applied, together with a Lagrangian model for particle tracking, to consider transport processes during a BURA wind episode in the Northern Adriatic. A specific BURA wind event in 1982 was chosen for the comparison of the numerical results with CZCS-data of NIMBUS 7 for the chlorophyll distribution. The simulation period covered 12 days and the barotropic circulation was forced by a northeasterly wind, variable in time and space. Although the approximations made were relatively coarse, the results were encouraging. The imperfections and limitations of this first attempt must be addressed in future simulations.
