This paper reports the application of expert systems technology to estimation and management of reliability and residual lifetime of complex structures, in particular of offshore structures. The aim of the work undertaken was to improve efficiency in structural maintenance. This involved designing informatic tools to assist the inspection experts. These informatic tools included "traditional" numerical programs, computational models and an expert system. The main aim of the paper is to present the philosophy behind the synthesis of these tools, the adopted methodology, the specially designed expert system architechure and the domain expert elicitation.
