Abstract

A recently proposed representation of MHD in terms of stream functions and potentials is shown to have very interesting features. The equations for the scalar functions clearly exhibit the driving terms for various instabilities; different types of MHD waves are contained in separate scalar equations, and reduced MHD equations can be derived in a natural way. These properties are extremely useful for the development of reduced or full MHD codes.
