Research recently performed in the US and in Europe has led to the conclusion that design criteria for emergency relief systems to be installed in batch reactors and storage tanks should be revised. The occurrence of two-phase flows and the need for experimental characterisation of the energy sources are the relevant features to be considered for an adequate vent sizing. The current norms are inadequate because they are based on the assumption of single-phase vapour flow, which generally gives an underestimation of the vent area.
