Abstract

The purpose of this study was to improve the understanding of physical phenomena governing the influence of rock microstructure and saturating fluids on acoustic waves used for geophysical prospecting. The research mainly concerned the sonic frequency band (10 kHz) used in acoustic logging. A resonant bar was developed, providing easy and accurate measurement of the velocity and attenuation of E and S waves at sonic frequencies, under confining pressures of up to 45 MPa. The results are compared with those obtained in the ultrasonic band (500 kHz).
