Abstract

The results of two years' research on the thermomechanics of clays are presented in two volumes. Volume 1 lays the foundations of a comprehensive theoretical treatment of the interaction between water and soil skeleton, involving: - developing a framework for inclusion of a water/soil particle thermally induced interaction into a thermodynamically consistent mixture theory approach; - studying possible modelling approaches that consider the effective thermal expansion coefficient of pore water dependency on pore water status; - testing artificial clays to assess pore water thermal expansion dependence on temperature, in the presence of different amounts of active clay minerals and also Boom clay, and - performing a laboratory test campaign on Boom clay, paying special attention to the response in the overconsolidated domain.
