The development of computer-aided design methods for steel-framed composite floored multi-storey buildings - Phase II

The purpose of the project was to enable designers to carry out conceptual budget design studies, leading to final design and the ability to estimate the steelwork required in the construction of multi-storey buildings. The work in Phase II concentrated on the development of an interactive system for code checking and material take-off, data for which were stored in a structural database with fast accessing facilities. The software developed had special facilities to allow analysis of subframes, whereby any part of the defined structure could be analysed separately with a minimum amount of interactive editing. The software developed in Phase I was restructured and a very user-friendly interactive interface developed for viewing the structural model and the results of the analysis, code checking and material take-off. Selective printing and plotting of results was also carried out interactively. The research has provided a solid foundation for an integrated suite of design software, to which further post-processors can be attached.
