Abstract

Experimental investigations of the dissolution of PuO(2) into inactive and alpha-bearing incineration residues are presented, the emphasis being on pretreatment with nitric acid. The report is in six parts. Part 1 reviews the literature on the main digestion methods for PuO(2) in incineration residues. Part 2 describes in detail results from the digestion of Pu-bearing ashes in the ALONA plant. Part 3 concerns the experimental investigations into the dissolution of ashes in sulphuric and nitric acids. The results of these experiments on inactive ashes formed the basis for investigations into the dissolution of PuO(2) in alpha-bearing incineration residues, which are the subject of Part 4. In Part 5, the Pu cleansing process is described. Finally, in Part 6, a first proposal for a process is presented on the basis of the results obtained, and a simplified process flowchart is discussed.
