Fabrication of carbide and nitride pellets and the nitride irradiations NILOC 1 and NILOC 2Funded under: JRC-REACTSAFE 5C
Besides the relatively well-known advanced LMFBR mixed carbide fuel, an advanced mixed nitride is also an attractive candidate for the optimised fuel cycle of the European Fast Reactor. Present knowledge about the nitride is still insufficient, however, and should be extended to the same level as that for the carbide fuel. This report describes sintering studies with type C and type DP carbide and nitride pellets, the fuel characterisation of the pellet types, their irradiation performance in experiments NILOC 1 and 2, and the relation between fabrication parameters and the initial in-pile performance. The investigation has shown that it is not sufficient to specify only the density of the fuel pellets for porous nuclear fuels. A method is given by which a second property, their thermal stability, can also be quantified.
