Experimental research on the applicability of thermal parameter identification techniques to building energy certification
The energy audit of an existing building, calculated as part of an energy up-grade or for certification purposes, can involve errors of the same order of magnitude as the potential energy saving. This is due to the appreciable discrepancies which can exist between theoretical and real values of important parameters. However, the experimental determination of the parameters which characterise the energetic behaviour of buildings can provide an alternative way of determining energy consumption. The data generally consist of climatic variables, energy consumptions and internal temperatures. This report describes the work accomplished in two years of experimental measurements and subsequent analyses carried out on four apartment buildings belonging to the Institute for Low-Cost Housing (IACP) of Varese . Various methods have been examined, namely: - the "Useful Energy Method", a simplified method with periodic measurement; - various "Building Energy Signature" methods and - dynamic simulation methods using "lumped" parameters, with and without the application of Kalman filters. The use of Kalman filters makes it possible to shorten the convergence time of the calculation and consequently, if the algorithm is included in the data acquisition system, to reduce to a minimum the time necessary for monitoring a building. In addition, the identified parameters were compared with theoretical values calculated by Italian normative programmes. The procedure adopted for the experimental measurements is described and the identification models analysed, comparing the difficulties encountered in their application and the results obtainable. Finally, particular attention is given to the data acquisition system, which combined low cost with simplicity of use, in order to demonstrate the practical feasibility of the technique.
