Abstract

A computer code was developed for the simulation and design of industrial glass smelting kilns. The code was used to improve the design and operating conditions of existing industrial glass kilns operating under oxy-fuel conditions. A coordinated experimental programme was carried out on various configurations, namely: a full-scale glass kiln, an isothermal model of the kiln, and several model burners and fuel atomisers. The experiments aimed to determine and optimise the flow and heat transfer characteristics of glass smelting kilns and guide the development of computer codes. The calculation method is innovative in that novel numerical procedures are required to deal with oxygen-rich atmospheres and with the substantial radiative heat transfer in the combustion chamber operating under oxy-fuel conditions.
