The different chapters of this volume present areas of European strength in cognitive neuroscience. They reflect the different views on relations between neuroscience and cognitive science. They cover the research themes of perception in the visual system and in pain, motor planning, learning, memory and language. The book also represents three routes followed by cognitive neuroscience. One is to move towards the centre, away from receptors into the sensory systems, another is through the study of neural plasticity and the third starts from behavioural work to become interested directly in the brain structures which are involved in cognitive behaviour.
