The project on Advanced Techniques integration into Efficient Scientific software (ATES) forms part of the sub-programme "Software Technology" of ESPRIT. It integrates formal proof techniques and abstraction mechanisms within a common framework to create an environment for scientific software design. It focusses on recent developments concerning abstraction of data types, database management, specification and program verification. A finite element software library has been developed to evaluate the potential of these advances for large-scale scientific and technical software packages.
