Environmental impact of the treatment plant effluent on the emission waters of Lake Varese
A study was conducted to evaluate the trophic potential of the effluent from wastewater treatment plants, which flows into the river Bardello (Lake Varese). From May 1987 to May 1988 algal assays were performed monthly with river water and effluent using the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum. Average annual values of AGP for river water and effluent of 20 mg/l and 24 mg/l respectively, were calculated. These values can be considered typical of an eutrophic environment. The algal assay AGP indicates that Fe is generally the main growth-limiting factor, with N and P as secondary limiting nutriments. The environmental impact due to the emission of treated waters into the Bardello river results in an increase in AGP values of about 30%. This does not imply a worsening of river water quality, according to the suggested classification.
