Abstract

Technological risk, considered as a negative side effect of the use of equipment or plant, can be evaluated by taking into consideration different boundaries of the system affected. The paper identifies four systemic levels, in order of increasing complexity, and outlines the status of the techniques adopted to evaluate risk at each level. It is shown how risk evaluation is a complex knowledge process and not an algorithm. The consensus on the findings is assured more by the transparency of the techniques used than by the numerical precision of the results.
