The metrology challenges facing small, medium enterprises in the next decade
The metrological needs of major manufacturers in the automobile, machine tools and white goods sector are analysed and their effect on the supply chain considered. These requirements include the production of components to a higher level of accuracy and the use of a statistical basis to determine the uncertainty of measurement. They will result in the need for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to manufacture to reduced tolerances, to implement new technologies, to carry out measurements and to have the ability to determine their uncertainty of these measurements. The results of surveys into the metrological performance of the UK's manufacturing industry are evaluated. The results are used to identify the aspects of metrology that SMEs need to address in order to meet the challenges of the 90's in technical, organisational and training areas.
