Abstract

The 3D ideal MHD stability code TERPSICHORE has been applied for the investigation of the stability properties of general l = 2 torsatron configurations. The low n and Mercier stability boundaries are determined. Low n mode structures that concentrate within Mercier unstable bands are radially localised and have higher critical beta. At moderate values of beta (greater than 2%), the iota profile becomes increasingly double-valued. Low n mode structures that concentrate in the region of tokamak-like magnetic shear tend to be radially global in character and can yield lower critical beta compared with the Mercier criterion. Results for the LHD torsatron are also presented.
