Abstract

Experimental results of the first operation of a quasi-optical gyrotron on the second harmonic are presented. With a large (mirror separation d = 329 mm) unoptimised Fabry-Pérot resonator (ohmic losses = diffractive losses), a nearly monomode emission (f(RF) approximately 197 GHz) at a power level of 8 kW has been measured for a beam current of 3 A (V(b) = 78 kV). Numerical simulations show that operation at the second harmonic is very sensitive to velocity spread.
