The main aim of the European Community's energy policy is to produce a secure supply of energy with minimal impact on the environment. Current energy issues in the EC are discussed, including the single energy market and the European energy charter. Facts and issues related to the production of electricity from nuclear energy, the nuclear fuel cycle and current environmental and safety issues are presented. Finally, the EC's involvement in nuclear safeguards and the Euratom Safeguards Directorate are described.
