A completely automatic, self-checking on-line monitor has been developed to measure simultaneously radioactive alpha and beta aerosols of artificial and natural origin. Maintenance intervals of approximately 6 months are generated by the step feed principle used in this monitor. The monitor is equipped with one direct measuring unit using an alpha spectroscopic silicon detector. It is highly sensitive to alpha and beta radiation and discriminates clearly between artificial and natural radiation. It enables the identification of natural and artificial alpha emitting nuclides. Experiments have shown that artificial alpha activity concentrations well below 1 Bq/m3 can be detected readily, even under extreme radiological conditions.
