Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The first oil crisis in 1973 brought about a profound change in the world's steel industry by causing a net drop in the consumption of crude steel on a world level. In the European Community the consumption of crude steel has generally been dropping since 1974. If the European steel industry is to maintain its current position or even develop further, it must continue to become more competitive in comparison with both its competitors world-wide and producers of rival non-ferrous materials. It is impossible to predict which lines of steel research will succeed and where this will occur (in Europe, Japan or the United States). However, since long-term research has to be started sufficiently early (as it takes longer to complete), an inventory of work in progress is presented.
