The paper summarises progress achieved in recent years in the field of radiation effects in non-metallic nuclear materials, essentially the ceramic nuclear fuels UO(2) and UN, as well as ceramics and glasses for solidification of high level radioactive waste. The importance of radiation effects and radiation damage for the technological application of nuclear materials is discussed.
